This real-life drama is based on a traumatic and stressful period in the writer's life, while caring for his mother who had Motor Neurone Disease and his uncle who had Alzheimer's. Caring for two people with differing needs, whilst still working, created a myriad of problems which are not helped by the care services, who frequently make the situation more stressful. It also highlights the failures in the care system and how the needs of the carer are often completely ignored and those who ought to be cared for are negligent. The writer tells his story through the eyes of a fictional principle character (Mike), and his friend (Sue). The story tells how they help and support each other through the stress and trauma caused by the unexpected twists and turns in their lives, and of those they care for. The story is based around the couples walks along the Thames Path. On these walks, they discuss their feelings and problems. Their shared experiences draw them closer and their friendship grows as they walk the different sections of the Thames Path discussing their problems, helping each other overcome bad experiences as they struggled to help those close to them. They also share hidden secrets which have been hidden to protect families from being hurt. It highlights the difficulties faced in caring for two older members of his family. The fight he had to get their problems properly diagnosed and the care they need. Motor Neurone Disease, and Alzheimer's disease require different types of care, but the care system often ignores the needs of those who care for people with these conditions. The writer reveals the poor standard of care often given to older people, and the needless suffering caused by failures in the care system, both to patients and their families. Also, the stress placed on the frequently forgotten and neglected carers, and the issues that are ignored, by social services, the health services, politicians and religious leaders who pretend these problems do not exist.
