On Homecoming Sunday at Abingdon Trinity Church, the congregation witnesses an event that would send shock waves back in time through this historic, quiet, beautiful town tucked just inside Virginia, on the border of East Tennessee. Writer Janet Allbritton is in town visiting her mother when she witnesses the preacher's death in the church fellowship hall. Janet is at a crossroads in her life and career and has left her home in a suburb of Washington, D.C., to give herself physical and psychological distance in her quest. She teams with writer Jefferson Rife, editor of the local newspaper, to explore the history of the region and publish articles in a column titled Local Legends.
