Sunshine Girl is the story of generations of hopes and dreams, joys and sorrows, challenges, victories, and disappointments lived out in the life of a young girl in the mid nineteen hundreds. Northwestern Wisconsin was a collage of farms, quietly ebbing into the age of industrialization, as new mechanical farm equipment slowly began to replace hand tools for farm work. Small towns served the needs of the farm communities and their own working population. Families recovering from the depression and the First World War were modernizing a bit, many just a step beyond what their immigrant parents had established. German or Scandinavian families composed much of the rural communities, with their industrious lifestyles. Social life centered on the church and rural school. While the social life in the German community often centered around the local tavern, the Scandinavian community was less open about their usage of beer and wine, and it was more of a personal choice than a cultural norm. There was, however, a different "elixir" that flowed through our Sunshine Girl's family-the fluid ebb and flow of dreams and nature, soaking up the atmosphere of the family farm, and the love and expectations of consideration for others. The country school, a limited number of schoolmate girlfriends, her brothers, and the farm animals that became her pets were objects of her affection. She learned from her kind-hearted Mama and Daddy about respect and regard for others, though, as the youngest of four, she may have pushed privilege a bit. As you read Sunshine Girl's story, you will understand that the "simpler life" was just as intricate as life today. Life then, as now, was built on heritage, relationships, ideals, differences, and all the components of society. Through Sunshine Girl you will catch a glimpse into the beautiful tapestry of life and all the factors that bring us to various perceptions and decisions in life. And you will surely find yourself in at least one incident or another, one joy, one heartache, one victory, or one disappointment.
