Paul was a city boy. This book tries to set Paul's ministry in the context of the cities he touched in his travels. A few of the cities Luke mentions are not covered--apologies to Beroea in Macedonia and the cities of Cyprus--but most are. The names of some of these cities--Philippi, Corinth, Rome, Thessalonica-- are well known to Bible readers because Paul wrote letters to them and these letters are in the Bible. But Paul never wrote a letter to Troas or Tarsus or Antioch of Syria as far as we know, and these cities are mostly unknown to the average reader even though some of them were major cities in Paul's time. Athens and Damascus are names everyone knows today but they may not know how these cities affected Paul. This book relates relevant information about these cities in which Paul lived and worked to his letters and the Book of Acts. The reader needs to be aware, however, that these studies are not technical, scholarly descriptions of the cities Paul visited. The chapters in this book contain studies that were presented on Wednesday nights after supper in a Baptist church. The author is sharing second hand information about cities that, for the most part, he has never visited. There is no new information here, but hopefully putting the cities up front will help make the stories in the book of Acts and in Paul's letters come alive. Those who are familiar with the literature on Paul's journeys will recognize the similarity between the title of this book--St. Paul and the Cities--and another book title, The Cities of St. Paul by Sir William M. Ramsay. Originally published in 1907, my introduction to the book came when it was reprinted in the 1960 edition during my seminary days. Since then it and the companion volume, St. Paul the traveller and the Roman Citizen (1897), have taught me most of what I know about the subject. Several footnotes in this volume will testify to my dependence but they do not begin to document all the basic knowledge about Roman cities that I've gained from him.
