Joaquín is now remarried and has for children. He is a citizen of the U.S. and works full-time in Santa Cruz County mental health services. He volunteers as a soccer coach, plays and sings in a band, and writes at night. "I think some of the stories in my book have to do with conscious and unconscious efforts to assimilate, to fit in.
