While the people and most towns are fictional, the history of wagon train travel along the Oregon Trail is quite accurate. Written as a love story, it none-the-less covers the trials and tribulations that met many of the women of the era and the men they married. It's a poignant story and graphic tale about Mary Liggett leaving her home in Cincinnati in 1876 to travel to Twin Forks, Wyoming. Mary heads west to find a possible husband close to her own age, as there were few young men left in Cincinnati, Ohio, after the civil war. She decides to travel with a wagon train on the Oregon Trail to get out west. Historically researched from actual wagon train journals kept by settlers, which now reside in the Smithsonian Institute, Gary has a way of telling this tale with both feeling and actual historical facts that make this novel stand out from so many others. All people in the novel are fictional.
