The Eagle is a novel that charts one man's experiences in WWI as he flies for the Lafayette Escadrille in France then for the US Air Service, after the Escadrille is disbanded. He defeats a leading German ace in aerial combat, and is bombed by the Germans in an effort at revenge. As he is searching through the wreckage of his billet the building collapses. He is badly injured, and loses his memory. He was married before the war, and after he slowly regains his memory, and realizes that he is disfigured by the injury, he tries to face up to the fact that his wife, who remarried on news that he had died, may not take him back again.
