Inspired by a book of Thomas Nagel (Nagel, 2012), where he conceals that "the materialist neo-Darwinian conception of nature is almost certainly false" (ibidem), I shall try by means of my analysis of being-there to construct a teleological conception of nature, explaining its constitution as well as the historical emergence of consciousness, cognition resp. thinking and values. In this regard, a teleological conception therefore means two different things: on the one hand, historically that nature purposefully yields beings that can recognize something like sense, meaning and direction, and on the other hand constitutionally that nature itself is meaningful and can conceive its meaning in our world by those beings that can recognize meaning. As such beings, we human beings fit well into the world and have found "a way of understanding ourselves that is not radically self-undermining, and that does not require us to deny the obvious" (Nagel, 2012, p. 25).
