Charles goes to a first class boarding school through the auspices of Sir Andrew Ballantyne Charles's stay at the school is brief as he has a major heart attack and has to be rushed to a Glasgow hospital and undergoes difficult, dangerous but successful open heart surgery which gives him normal health through his teen years and into adulthood. Charles marries, Douglas Hamilton reappears just in time to visit Sir Andrew Ballantyne before he dies. Sir Andrew's Will bequeaths the Glen Cannich Estate to Eilid with sufficient funds held in trust to allow her to live in a comfortable manner. He reveals in a private letter given to Eilid by his solicitor that he does have misgivings about the origin of Charles. This causes consternation and concern to Eilid but she puts those worries behind her not realizing the David Findlay, the Scots private detective hired by Red Ericsson is closing in to confront her. Findlay visits Charles who is now leader of the newly formed Scottish Republican Party and through him arranges to meet Eilid without giving Charles any reason for their meeting . Lance Ericsson inadvertently hears through his affair with Ruth Rivers that his twin brother has been found in Scotland. The evil Lance decides to do something about the possibility of the Ericsson wealth being divided. So with his father now in Scotland ready to confront Eilid about the abduction of his son 34 years previously, Lance takes the company plane to the Scottish Highlands with murder in mind.
