Dr Valinsky approaches the Bible as one of many scriptural maps for the spiritual journey from bondage to freedom that has the potential to promote peace, healing and unity for individuals and humanity. In order to do this one has to move away from a surface level reading to a more symbolic hidden level. This is in accord with the Jewish tradition that the Bible has different levels of interpretation as well as Jesus stating that he speaks in parables. Henri Bergson in his 1932 book, "Two Sources of Religion and Morality" states that one source of ethics is tribal and the other is universal. Dr Valinsky's orientation is universal. He writes: "I believe there is a golden thread of truth woven into the structure of every religious and spiritual tradition, and that truth is the root and all the traditions are the branches. We honor that truth when we search for and affirm that which unites these traditions rather than that which divides them. When any tradition sets itself up as the sole arbiter of that ultimate truth it dishonors the truth and diminishes the flow of energy, a flow of selfless unconditional love. It then becomes a deformed branch, still connected but now diminishing the beauty and harmony of the entire creation." Within this orientation Dr Valinsky's approach to Biblical interpretation is based largely on the following ideas: 1. Divine truth unites and does not divide. It is universal and not tribal. 2. The spiritual journey involves removing all the barriers to pure love. 3. The purest form of love is selfless. 4. To love all and exclude none is Divine consciousness. 5. The attributes of Divine consciousness are selfless unconditional love, accurate perception, total understanding and compassion. 6. The Bible, as all other major scriptures, can be used as a guide to spiritual development 7. Divinely guided spiritual development leads a person from the bondage of desire and fear to a state of total freedom, a movement from constricted consciousness to infinite consciousness. 8. The hidden meaning of the Bible that can be used as a map for the spiritual journey is to understand it as referring to an internal journey where the battle for freedom from suffering and reaching infinite consciousness takes place. 9. In every individual there are three major levels of consciousness, the animal, human and Divine. 10. The meanings of the names of people and places in the Bible can be used as guides to the deeper meaning of the passages they occur in.
