Physicist Mackenzie Randall recruits former classmate and community college math instructor Jeff McGregor to join her as a partner at the firm Systems of Sentience LLC, which requires his specialized skill set to resolve a problem involving communication with the International Space Station. And so begins their efforts to pick up where their respective fathers' left off with a newer technology, CETCOS II, which has the capability to transport one's consciousness into alternate dimensions. McGregor's skills are put to the test when Dr. Randall becomes stranded in an alternate dimension, a situation compounded by her distraction from work due to a troubling incident from her past. Spanning eight years, Dark Matters: In Search of Mackenzie, is an enigmatic story of two researchers and their travails as they wind through a series of interdimensional migrations, all the while attempting to deal with the intricacies of their technology as well as Mackenzie's haunting memories of a former professor who made her life a personal hell. In the process of their migrations, Jeff and Mackenzie learn how the Cuban Missile Crisis took a very different turn in another world and how clean hydrogen bombs and faster-than-light travel could be accomplished with vastly more advanced technologies in such worlds.
