The Courtship of Miles Standish published in 1858, is a book of poetry by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), and contains the well-known narrative poem about the early days of Plymouth Colony. The colonial settlement established in America by the Mayflower pilgrims. The poem is set in the year 1621 against the backdrop of a fierce Indian war and focuses on a love triangle among three Mayflower passengers: Miles Standish, Priscilla Mullins and John Alden, although the historical evidence is inconclusive as to the personal histories of the passengers. The independent-minded woman utters the famous retort, "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" The saga has a surprise ending, one full of optimism for the American future. Similar to the original edition, this volume also includes "Birds of Passage," a series of poems. Longfellow wrote many lyric poems known for their musicality and often presenting stories of mythology and legend. He became one of the most popular American poet of his day and had success overseas.
