Rob Amity is an Air Force pilot returning to civilian life near Vietnam War's end. Depressed and isolated in his empty apartment, he calls his friend, combat veteran Hal Freed. He invites him on a Route 66 road trip to "kick some ass." Freed joins him in Texas in Amity's bargain-priced but very expensive Porsche. Frustrated with their circumstances, they do several foolish things on their way to hike the Grand Canyon. College students, who discover they are Air Force pilot veterans, harass them. Their brutal revenge on the boys scares them into cutting their trip short. Admitting that they need to grow up, they decide to return to their homes and face their futures head on. Freed encourages him to reconnect with the widowed Suzy Alexander and her infant son. She is a woman Amity has always loved. Her father lands him a job in Oklahoma assisting oil field supplier Stanton BigHeart. As the oil boom rapidly expands, so does the value of Amity to the company. He focuses on work more than on Suzy, even as she craves his attention. BigHeart, Suzy's father, and Freed each give him the same advice to stop ignoring the woman he loves. He mends his ways and sets a wedding date. But BigHeart's company has a purchase offer that complicates wedding plans. Amity must be in Texas to sign the settlement. Will money triumph over love? Can he do both? Whom will he let down? What does he truly love?
