Why Do You Stay?' Is a story about domestic violence and the question, ' Why Do You Stay?' haunts me still ... even years after the abuse. I wrote this book to answer that question, not just for me, but for the thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of women and children who have lived with and through domestic violence and emotional abuse at the hands of another. Stories of domestic violence have a common thread. In my own journey and subsequent healing, I often gained strength from knowing that I wasn't alone in making poor choices. I wasn't the only one who had chosen to "stay a victim." But, through consistent effort, counseling, and determination to overcome my circumstances and change myself, I and others before me, have come out the other side, to a better place. Reliving my story was a part of writing this book ... a painful, but necessary part. It is my hope that in reading my story, those who have been victims, and perhaps some who are still victims, will understand that there is a way out of the abyss of abuse. Victims of domestic violence are looking for understanding and a means to make a change. There are lots of people who want to and can help: therapists, friends, family members, employers, or anyone who wishes to understand "why they stayed." This book is about "why I stayed," but it's also about why I decided to leave behind the choices that lead me down the road to abuse. Anthony Robbins once said, "If you want a better life, ask a better question." The best question I have ever asked myself was "why did I stay." Answering that question truthfully, unflinchingly, and unalterably is why I wrote this book. The answer helped me begin my healing, and I hope it will contribute to your healing as well.
