Overview
The Great Recession has blindsided Jen Carrigan, an up-and-coming Silicon Valley art director. First she loses her job, then her home. Broke and desperate-but drawing on the resourcefulness she learned as a sidekick to her adventure-loving father-she learns about an abandoned property, packs up her dog and become a squatter. The squat? A magnificent mansion nestled in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, built by a tech mogul and now being overtaken by the forest. While trespassing in a nearby orchard, Jen encounters Stanley Abram, a damaged, solitary widower who's haunted by his troubled past with the mansion's former owner. Stanley becomes her unlikely mentor. When a mysterious holiday invitation from her older sister draws Jen back into the shattered family that exiled her years before, the ghosts of the past are awakened. And just Jen discovers the courage to untangle a decades-long web of lies, the mansion delivers a devastating surprise.
