Randy Randolph is a naive and inexperienced cadet reporter for a small London suburban newspaper. Somewhat of a social misfit, Randy spends all his spare time in the archives of his newspaper office searching for cold case murders, with the pipe dream of one day writing a best-selling novel. He comes across a story that intrigues him about a local man who had mysteriously disappeared, his body being found a year later, buried in his own back yard, his widow charged with the murder. Randy researches the case, searching through a plethora of microfiche newspaper reports from years gone by. He uncovers some startling and sordid facts about the case and manages to arrange an interview with the accused widow, now out of prison on bail. The moment Randy sets eyes on Diana Fraser he falls hopelessly in love with her, despite the fact that she is twice his age, wealthy, beautiful and elegant - right out of Randy's class. But Randy is an inveterate dreamer, unable to recognise deceit or harsh reality when it confronts him.In attempting to prove Diana's innocence, Randy unwittingly opens a Pandora's box, revealing some disturbing facts about her late husband. Randy's unrequited love for Diana, combined with a deeply inquisitive mind, lead him deeper and deeper into the discovery of quagmire of immoral and illegal practises committed by Peter Fraser. It soon becomes evident that Randy now knows too much about the Frasers, and his life becomes endangered. Ignoring the danger, he continues his relentless and dangerous quest, believing naively that his actions will rescue the beautiful and mysterious Diana from life in prison. It is Randy's confrontation with someone Diana refers to as 'The Bristol Bomber', that his life finally unravels. He finds, to his peril, that the people he thought were his friends are now his deadly enemies.
