In a quiet, rural Pennsylvania town, a balding, pudgy private detective name David Rubenstein will have to face an unfathomable horror. A Jew in a place that has no tolerance for Jews, he must reach deep within himself for a courage he never thought he had. The story begins when a local man finds a negative lying in the snow at a local Walmart, an ordinary piece of trash that contains horrible implications. When he shows it to Rubenstein, the detective dismisses the man as a kook and almost tosses the photograph into a trash can. But something in the negative catches Rubenstein's eye. In it he sees the image of a young girl, half of her gone where the negative has been torn away. He has the negative developed the next day and sees that the girl in the print is staring out at the world in a horror, her gaze permanently frozen in death, forever a witness of the unspeakable crime that has taken her young life. As a result of that image, David Rubenstein begins a terrifying journey. Rubenstein must combat the growing evil that threatens to destroy everything he knows and loves. To this end he must enlist the help of his old partner, Justin Hydrich. He and Rubenstein had worked together in the homicide division of the New York City police department until Hydrich was forced to resign in disgrace. Rubenstein's collaborator is a deeply flawed man, a heroin addict teetering on the edge of death, but something about him has driven Rubenstein to become his permanent caretaker. Rubenstein can see the analytical genius in Hydrich, one of the qualities that made him the greatest detective Rubenstein had ever known, until his old partner began his long decent into the abyss. As the terror unfolds, both men are forced to confront the unthinkable. They find nothing less than the coming of a second holocaust, orchestrated by a madman who is determined to finish the work Hitler had started. From its beginning to its end, Reich Reborn takes the reader through a complex series of, truths and half-truths, constantly challenging them to place faith in what could ultimately be a lie.
