He lived in 16th-century England, at the time of the Renaissance, the Reformation and the wars of religion, in which the news of the newly discovered areas of the world constantly reached Europe. In this context Utopia arises. The work is a recount of a supposedly true voyage of a navigator who claims to have seen an ideal state on an island somewhere beyond Ecuador. More argues with him: should there be private property? Is social equality good? Can a society generate enough assets if nobody wants to make a profit? Is there a good and fair head of state who does not war on wars for personal interests or squeeze his subjects?The questions show that Moro Utopia is amazingly modern. In fact, many of the ideas are prematurely socialist, even communist, 300 years before Karl Marx. And it is still discussed whether private property is a luck or a misfortune for society. Another of the merits of the text is that it created the literary genre of utopia.
