Somewhere in this window of the creative process, someone begins to imagine a mechanical assemblage able to swing the hammers with pinpoint accuracy at a specific string or grouping of strings; it would be a device controlled by the fingers. Whoever this someone was, he must have imagined that if the device was properly constructed, a player of this instrument could eventually hammer one string with each finger. How mind-blowing it must have been to the inventor, even in the very early stages of conceiving, then working out all the challenges involved in constructing such an apparatus. And once the concept of this device, this musical instrument was in his mind, he wouldn't have been able to think about anything else or even rest until such a machine had become a tangible reality! Bartolomeo Cristofori was the name of this inventor and early versions of his machine included the clavinet, harpsichord and other close but not quite there attempts. Eventually, all the creative pieces fell into place and the musical vision became a reality: the pianoforte, aka: the piano.Christian religion and the Christian brand operates outside of a mindset that allows any sort of growth or evolution of its message. If the rest of humanity had to function within the doctrinal confines of religion and the Christian brand, the piano would never have been invented! Its doctrines emphatically prohibit any such evolution or expansion of the basic tenants. Its goal is one static imperative: accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your "personal" savior and you shall be saved. That is all that is required to fulfill your lifelong mission as a born again Christian. This is a static and lifeless imperative which, for my money, doesn't fit with the person nor the message of the Jesus we read about in the gospel of Matthew; not in word or deed. The kingdom of God imperative, which was the actual gospel message Jesus preached, is very much like the invention or the evolution of the piano. Our perception of the kingdom is very much like the piano before even the first steps of its evolution came to be. Today, we know what the piano is, but we don't yet know what the kingdom of God is! We don't know what it looks like or rather will look like, but we do have somewhat of a shared impulse of what it should be, it's trying to be or what we want it to be. So as we consider what we are trying to accomplish with it, we may be able to patchwork something together as a broad strokes conceptualization from which to begin building a working model; a sort of beta program or instrument. We might think of it as a rudimentary form of the piano. How do we start something like that? I think the best way is to look back through the events of history to see if there are instances of egalitarian or humanitarian events or movements that might help us. We can dig back into the distant past, of course, but there may be events in our recent history, say from the past 100 to 150 years, which might give us more relevant cues from which to draw upon. If we can find some, we may be able to pull components from them that we would want to include in this future apparatus, instrument or vehicle to utilize them or optionally, find inspiration from them in our quest toward the actualization of our goal-the kingdom of God.
