Field Mapping

A detailed geologic mapping of Afikpo and its environs in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State Nigeria was carried out on map scale of 1:25000. The mapped area is bounded by latitudes 5o51IN and 5o55IN, and longitude 7311e and 7o35IE, it covers an area extent of about 81km2 .A total of about 15 surface outcrops were mapped and the two major lithologic units were distinguished. These are the shale units and the sandstone units.The depositional environment in the study area is paretic hence the lithology of the area graded into stones units.An evaluation of the economic geology of the area reveals that the standstone, gypsium and dolerite quarried to obtain aggregates for construction purposes and they are in economic viable quantity.
