Cara Rizzo, the daughter of a disabled World War II veteran and widower, leaves home for the University of California at Berkeley, where she meets student activist Mario Savio, dedicates herself to fighting for civil rights and free speech and opposes the war in Vietnam, points of contention with her father. In her absence, Cara's father struggles to find a purpose for his life, which is shrouded in self doubt and loneliness. It is Cara's discovery of a secret from her father's past that estranges her from him and it takes her years to come to understand why her father lied to her and resolves to reconcile with him. By then, she is married and thinking about starting a family of her own and when that eventually happens she has to confront her attitudes about the social changes she espoused.
