The secular world around us is saying in a loud voice, 'we can take care of ourselves, we do not need God, the church, or a priest to guide us, and we are in control, we no longer need spiritual answers to practical questions'. Then comes the question, how do we view priests as leaders of the Christian community? The documents of the Second Vatican Council instruct us to refocus more clearly on the fundamental relationship between the Christian ministry and the ministry of Jesus. The person of Jesus Christ and his own ministry remains the abiding source and model of all Christian ministry. The picture of Jesus is also the picture of anyone who wants to be a leader in the community: or rather of anyone who feels called to be a minister, a servant of the community. Christian leadership is a pastoral ministry, not primarily a cultic function. It is necessary that we revert to Jesus' understanding of leadership in the church and abandon the entire system we have inherited, and that the leaders show us the way in becoming true followers of Jesus. So the topic Servant Model Leadership: A Spiritual Based Ethical Model for Pastoral Leadership Today is very relevant today. The objective of this work is to examine today's pastoral context of leadership and to understand the relevance of the servant model leadership in the life of priests. The procedure of the work consists of the following: The first chapter introduces the notion of the leadership by explaining the different secular leadership theories. The second chapter is a thorough and scientific analysis of the leadership qualities in the present pastoral context. Here we look at the shift of change in the understanding of leadership by analysing the different leadership models in the society and in the church. The third chapter will discuss how the servant model leadership is the model of leadership in the present scenario. The chapter develops into the biblical understanding, particularly on the life and ministry of Jesus.
