This is the story of Violet Spring, the daughter of an invalid mother and long distance truckdriver father. Violet's Aunt Betsy, who lives nearby, provides love and care to her niece; but that doesn't stop Violet from putting up a wall that doesn't allow love to enter. Filled with fear when her father, miles away, was injured and hospitalized, she will not travel more than fifty miles from her home in Ripley, West Virginia. Violet with an analytical mind, finds a career in computer programming. Her weekends are spent walking the paths around her home and painting all the wonders of her 'royal estate'.
