Dr. Joseph Lansing was used to hardship. He had lost both his parents at a young age. He went to live with the Sioux and fought their enemies. He went back East to become a doctor, then once again headed West. He became a captive of the Sioux when the wagon train in which he was traveling was attacked and once again he lived with the Sioux. He and his family struggled with the hard transition from living with the Sioux to returning to the white world he'd left long ago.
