When Darkness Falls is the first installment of the Fraternity of Blood Trilogy, it begins in Ancient Egypt when a secret vampire society keeps a scroll that contains a prophecy of one amongst them who would be able to walk under the sun. The Ivanovitch Hunters are in search of the scripture and they hire Frederick Madsen to help to find the scroll. In an expedition to Egypt, Frederick suffers an attack during a solar eclipse. The attack transforms him. He saves his wife by sharing his blood, and both become vampires. He sends away his only child, Edgar Madsen, to be raised by his brother-in-law, Anatole Ivanovitch, leader of the vampire hunters. Edgar carries the vampiric blood from his parents; he dies in the war and becomes a vampire with abilities to roam during the day, thus fulfilling the ancient prophecy. Edgar joins his vampire parents - Frederick and Martina Madsen, and vow to find his children who inherited the vampire blood. A new society is formed in which the descendants of the Madsen Family must gain the knowledge that their fate is to become a vampire when they die. They are humans, with vampire strength, they can have children who will become vampires. When Darkness Falls marks the beginning of the saga - when the prophecy is fulfilled unearthing consequences amongst the vampires - They need to maintain their secrecy, and they will fight to preserve the secret while battling the vampire hunters to maintain their existence. Anatole Ivanovitch raises an army of hunters and their descendants o fight against the vampires. Edgar Madsen becomes the leader of the new breed of vampires, he vows to protect his kind, but he is also conflicted because he is part of Ivanovitch's blood. There is a struggle of humans and vampires to maintain their existence, the conflict between darkness and light, and the quest for survival of creatures who have lived in secrecy, with the help of loyal humans, they fight to maintain their immortality.
