The Public Guardians : A Dark Crime Comedy

I worked in the Special Victims Unit (SVU) of the Chicago Police Department Detective Division from 2003 to 2017. It was the one of the best hidden secrets of the Detective Division next to the defunct Auto Theft Unit. The Special Victim's Unit focused on Juvenile, Domestic, Missing Persons and Elder abuse amongst other things. Believe it or not by the Detective Department Special Order we also were required to investigate all treason cases.Many of our cases involved Group Homes and Nursing Homes. I had a front row seat for a life time's worth corruption, incompetence, greed and lack of human compassion.One day while about on my investigations I saw an interesting sight. On Clyborne Avenue heading North West from Halstead past the edge of the Old Cabrini Green High-Rise Housing Projects there was a group of three wheel chair bound people. The first person was the engineer because he was driving the train with his electric chair. The next two were just holding on one behind the other. I wondered on what sort of adventure could these three be tasked. This story is my imagination giving life to that adventure.The Public Guardian trio are not the main characters of each chapter. They are the vehicle that takes the reader from one crime story to the next. If the reader feels these stories are contrived and improbable, I assure them that although the names may not be the same the stories are happening everyday.As I wrote this novella I became emotionally attached to the Public Guardians.
