It's the characters that worked here that, for me, made Newton heath special. To say they were eccentric would be an understatement. I don't believe you'd find such unconventional characters in any other workplace. Newton Heath is a railway diesel depot. It's where the local passenger trains are maintained. Also light maintenance is carried out on main line diesel locomotives. However, it used to be a steam depot and although the change from steam to diesel happened before I came here, Just, many of the men that I first worked with were ex steam men and steam was still very much in their systems. This book is a series of short stories about some of my experiences working here. I wrote it in 2002, a couple of years before I retired. The incidents described are all true, as best I can remember, as are the characters involved. I couldn't make them up. However I have changed a few names to protect the guilty.
