Even when it isn't the foremost thought on our minds, we are all - every one of us - on a metaphorical journey, as well as also being the hero or heroine of our story of that journey. That journey is the one from innocence and ignorance to maturity and wisdom. It is the process of uniting our individual soul with the universal soul. The hoped-for end-result and the journey to it can be characterized as self-realization, self-actualization or, as C. G. Jung identified it, individuation. Jung recognized that alchemy was a symbolic representation of the individuation process. In Jungian theory, the Self signifies the coherent whole, unifying both the consciousness and unconscious mind of a person. The Self, according to Jung, is the realized product of individuation, which is defined as the process of integrating one's personality. In two stories the author honors spiritual guides who have helped her along her path: Adrienne J. Smith, Ph.D. (Ode to Adrienne) and Gabriel Halpern (Gathering the Words of the Master). In her opinion, both their wisdom and their desire to inculcate their wisdom into the following generations should be commemorated. Chrysopoeia is the continuation of the story of a secondary character, Jaxson Wilson, from the author's second book The Accidental Mother. In this story he redeems himself, refining the dross of his previous mistakes and bad habits into "gold", when he encounters the people who give his life purpose. The Sieve of Morpheus and the poems describe persons (including the author) experiencing events, or in some other fashion, coming to the realization that they are ready to submit themselves to the refining fire and the waters of regeneration in order to advance toward their unified Self.
