Lack of knowledge of God's Word is most dangerous for the committed believer. Thus, we become judgmental of others and legalistic, without the compassion demonstrated by our compassionate God. This flaw therefore causes us to skip over passages that teach about the Sabbath. An examination of the Sabbath throughout the ages until the time of Jesus and even after His resurrection is clearly taught in the scriptures and is a great eye-opener for the diligent believer. However, most of us prefer to believe that Jesus discarded the Sabbath, despite the fact that we know that He did not do away with the other nine commandments. This attitude frees us to do what we want with time which rightly belongs to God, according to the prophet, Isaiah (Isa 58:13, 14). Therefore, a thorough investigation into the attitudes, practices and teaching of Jesus the Nazarene will surprise most of us. Because many modern-day Sabbath keepers display the same legalistic attitudes as the Pharisees of Jesus' time, many of us are turned off from the Sabbath, dismissing the entire idea as heretical. An obvious choice has to be made. If God discarded the law then we may commit adultery, steal, covet our neighbor's wives and property. Or we must keep the whole 10 yards of the Commandments, and not just nine yards. The trouble is that most of us do not have the time to research such details since we are struggling to survive, to feed our families and to climb up the corporate ladder in order to secure and establish ourselves in the material world. Our top priority is to be on display to our neighbors and to be accepted and honored by men. Therefore, time with God is left in the background of our lives, while we wither away spiritually and in every other part of our personalities. Let us be encouraged by the words of Paul, the apostle, and study the scriptures to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen that do not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth (2 Tim 2:15).
