In the Rigel Kent solar system, on the world of Kam-no-Kai, a scientist discovers a First Race data disk, which may hold the identity of who and what the First Race was... Meanwhile, Jace Starlon is hired by Mika Misu, an agent of the Silurian Magístrata, to investigate a First Race ruins. Jace initially refuses the offer, but reluctantly accepts when Mika pulls legal stings to force Jace's cooperation. Their destination lies in the Glass Desert, near the infamous Janosheck Crater, on the rocky world of Kam-no-Kai, known to Old Earthers as Proxima b. The trek to the destination is dangerous due to nuclear fallout from the Janosheck and political tension between the New Earth United Republics and Silurian High Command, the two world-nations that control Kam-no-Kai's natural resources and antiquities market. Jace hires a guide, a Kam-no-Kai native named Nyx, a mag tao woman whose connections with the tao underworld and experience as a Glass Desert guide make her the perfect and obvious choice for the mission. What begins as a simple smuggling job turns into a legendary quest when Jace discovers something unexpected in a First Race library, a discovery which leads him directly into the hands of the Equinox Corporation's most ambitious and dangerous project yet: a First Race cloning program. Some extinct races should remain extinct.
