At the age of 24, Barbara felt trapped and wanted to be free from her sheltered upbringing in South Jamaica, Queens. She didn't feel as if her life was going anywhere. In search of freedom and to have a better future, she decided to join the United States Air Force. It is during her eight years in the military where Barbara would realize she didn't know what she wanted out of life. She also didn't know where she was going, or who she was. While on the journey of self-discovery, she would experience many lesson on self-love, being fearless, and having faith in God.
