Christopher Jones is sitting in his favourite place, the local cemetery, talking directly to the reader about his favourite topic of conversation: cemeteries. As a result of an accident he suffered whilst trying to break into his old school, he has sustained a bang on the head. By virtue of an old friendship, he possesses something, which somebody who has sustained such an injury arguably should not. As he is leaving the cemetery, on his way back to work, he thinks he can detect a faint odour of eggs in the air, though the significance of this, if it has any, escapes him.Christopher Jones has no interest in the world of work, and his indifference extends to his current job. The only relief he experiences from the tedium of it derives from the fun of the practical jokes he plays on the people he meets throughout the course of his working life.On a subsequent visit to the cemetery, he encounters a mysterious old man who advises him against returning to work that day. But he does, only to learn that his employer has decided to impose on staff a policy that reminds him of the petty discipline he experienced as a child and arouses in him a corresponding resentment against his Managers. He sees a psychologist. He tries to relax by visiting museums and art galleries, trying to absorb the world of Culture in his immediate surroundings in an effort to take his mind off things. But all to no avail. The hatred he feels will not abate. He refuses to comply with the policy his employer has introduced, his relationship with that employer breaks down and he is suspended from work. His union rep, too, disowns him, albeit for different reasons. Thus isolated, he is drawn further and further under the influence of the old man he met at the cemetery. But who is that old man? Is he a real person, or a figment of Christopher's imagination, the result of a possible undiagnosed brain injury, caused by his accident? Whatever the truth, Christopher becomes increasingly psychotic, hatching a plot for revenge against his employer, which will put him unknowingly on a collision course with the chief victim of his best practical joke to date. .
