When The Creator Moves Me

When the first hippie activists wound their way to the Navajo Reservation at Big Mountain, Arizona, what they saw and did would influence social and environmental activism in the Black Mesa region for years to come. Navajo Grandmothers were being tormented. Water wells had been capped. Sheep, goats, cattle, and horses confiscated. Sacred ceremonial sites desecrated, all at the hands of corporations promoting uranium and coal extraction and the U.S. Congress' passage of the 1974 Hopi/Navajo Land Settlement Act. In 1991, the activist band, Clan Dyken, followed the lead of their predecessors and made their first annual Beauty Way Supply Run to Big Mountain. They carried supplies to resisters who refused to relocate, resisters who received no support from agencies who could have helped, including their own tribal government. Grandmothers put their lives on the line for their children and grandchildren--seven generations out. When Creator Tells Me to Go is the story of both the Big Mountain Dineh and Clan Dyken--what happened, how they met, and why they have remained in each other's lives for over a quarter of a century.
