Travis Calkins told stories to his son Larry about life growing up during the roaring 20's and the Great Depression. Travis tells of his parents struggle through the Depression and their fight to regain the dignity they previously held. His father, as a stockbroker, lost everything. Seemingly unfair events tore the family apart. His parents divorced. When WWII began, Travis went to be with his father in California and secured a war job at an airplane manufacturing company. Travis encouraged his mother to come to California and she and his sister moved in with his father and him. They remarried. Travis was drafted during the war and became a pilot. After the war, Travis started college and married. Financial issues once again hit the family in an unexpected way and his father regained his composure and found a new creed that helped him through his mental anguish.Larry compiled these stories, retelling them in factual but interesting fashion.
