Twenty-six year old Kim Hart is happy living alone with her dog Loki and working at The Jade Castle restaurant. Apart from her occasionally waking gasping for breath-a condition she believes is related to sleep apnea-her life is great. One night during a robbery after hours, Kim hears her friends voice inside her head-RUN. Later, he tells her that she was able to hear him telepathically through their Companions, an entity within each person composed of a community of microorganisms. Suddenly, Kim finds herself thrust into a new world on the brink of destruction.
