A Scotland Yard case that began with the theft of roofing lead ("flying blue pidgeon") led Scotland Yard to put inspectors on overtime handling that on top of theft on the waterfront and disappearing waterfront laborers. When a high ranking government official complained to both the Yard and to Sherlock Holmes, Holmes declined the case. Gregson and Lestrade continue with the case, which leads Lestrade to a new pub, The Lancashire Rose. The part owner of the Rose, Clea Cheatham had reported the loss of a barrel of red corn and other goods she needed for her kitchen.
