He is a former Mayor of a Michigan City who resigned in frustration when everyone including his wife believed he perpetrated a sexual assault. He wants to help but is fearful he will drive the skittish woman away. In searching for more information on her he uncovers something that puts her life at risk and leads to her baby being kidnapped. Teaming up they go in search of her baby while trying to avoid being victims themselves. When Bart learns her whole life story he has to make a decision that will forever change his life.The story takes place in the south and has many memorable characters.
