Between the Hill is a depiction of life in the Valley of Podolo, or Podolo Valley that was patched between two hills, Yandi and Nyadoe. The book opens with the description of the valley, portraying the nature of life therein; its natural resources and some of its prominent features. Then it moves on to depict its life philosophy in contrasting the relationships between men and women. This proved to be similar to what it is in most parts of the world, which is patriarchal. But the gist of the narration does not fall in place until we meet one of the Podolo's prominent citizens known as Aunt Tillah, or simply Tillah. She was the widow of a great businessman in the valley, who on his demise left his whole estate to his wife. Yet, that was contrary to how things worked in Podolo. Anyway, with her introduction to the reader, she then takes the center stage in the whole narration. The story unfolds how after taking in her niece to live with them, she began to be conflicted about her. She eventually planned to kill her, but things turned upside down and she ended up in jail. Then the girl she wanted to kill is the one who worked hard to procure her release from jail. She received love and mercy from unexpected source. It is a riveting story that ends on a different note than most people would have expected. The book has questions for every chapter, all intended to help the students with structure, key ideas and details.
