A memoir of a woman who survived rape and molestation as a child/teen. She married as a teen--became a single Mom at 17. She struggled with work place bias and coercion from men on the job from promises of promotion to blackmail. She was raising kids with special needs who needed multiple surgeries to correct their ailments. She realized that she had to raise herself to a higher level of employment to provide what her children needed to survive. Her marriages never survive the stress of the burdens or her work load. So she researched and she chose to educate herself in the technology of reclaiming the land of post strip mining in the all male world of coal mining. The outside part of the work suited her tomboy nature, the farming part suited her inner nuturing self, and heavy equipment her drag racing history. After 10 yrs. of studying and self-educating, she broke the glass ceilings and the restricting of females on a coal mine with new technology of soil chemistry, the important water and air movement in a refurbished soil that had been stockpiled for 1 to 5 years and water management on permits for successful bond release. Not common knowledge or practices right after the new mining laws of the 70s were passed, which she could quote line by line because of her extensive reading and research on the subject. She became CEO of her own consulting firm before the age of 40. She dealt with the hard remarks from some of the men who thought she should be home cooking and cleaning (she did most of that at midnight). She became a top environmental consultant in her state on technical issues of re-vegetation, regulations, reclamation, soil and water management and use of compost and organic applications while planting post mine lands. She won both state and federal awards on reclaimed land, although her her bosses refused to let her accept the awards in public for fear their "company would look like sissies". Her income as a consultant once she incorporated her own firm and worked in Kentucky coal mines in both ends of the state, mirrored her success.
