Pull Up A Chair: Fireside Tales And Stories From Rural Donegal During The War Years.

Shamus and Dan are two characters who meet up for company and conversation in rural Loughros Point in Ardara Co Donegal Ireland. It is an area of outstanding beauty but also on the wild Atlantic coast of Ireland. Shamus is in his eighties and is a former Gaelic league teacher and activist, Dan is his neighbor, and is in his thirties. There is warmth, innocents and kindness between Shamus and Dan, these were hard times in rural Donegal due to poverty emigration and world recession along with the great depression. The conversations are writings from my Grandfather Brian O Cianaigh born Ardara 1877, he died during the war 1943. The ten years before he died, he wrote the Gaelic column "Are you learning Irish" and while i was researching i found this series of writing spanning the period from October 1937 to April 1941. I contributed to the end of the book to actual events that happened in Derry City during Feis Colmcille, Easter 1941. The main concern for both men was the preservation of their native language, also the war clouds are hanging overhead. They talk a lot about the cursed boundary which is the border that divides Ireland. Incredibly eighty two years later the border is still making world headlines because of Brexit backstop. There is a vein of humor running through their conversations, there is nice Christmas stories, talk of the fairies, but their conversations can wander in all direction from the saving of the turf to the price of eggs. So if you want to be transported back to rural Ireland 1937 and hear conversation that has been buried for eighty two years you may well enjoy this book, well "Pull up a chair." Brian O Cianaigh spent his entire life dedicated to the Irish league movement. He was an award winning Playwright, Poet and singer and holds a unique record of first prize in each category at the Oireachtas in Dublin during the early 1900s. He was the chief organizer of the first ever Gaelic literature festival of New York City 1906 and a founder member of the Gaelic League in Strabane 1902. His Gaelic books wrote in 1902 were also then commissioned for use in the National schools of Ireland. He never got to meet any of his grandchildren. My mother was five year old when he died.
