For as long as I can remember, my mother has always said to me, "My daughter, he took us in as his own family. Since you were nine months old, he took care of you." Those words have made me question everything. Why would he want to take advantage of a baby he took in as his own? What was going through his mind when he would look at me? When did this start? Where did this come from? Did he change my diaper and think about touching me? What about his own kids? Did he ever think about touching them, or no, because they were his biological children? Is that where he drew the line? If he loved me like his own, why would he hurt me in this way? And, why couldn't my mom see that he was hurting me? He was hurting her, too. Why couldn't she see that he was hurting us?What did she see ever in him? Why did she ever trust him? Why couldn't she see what was going on? He hurt her in so many ways, why would she think he was any good for me? And why would she stay for so long with this man, who has hurt her so many times and in so many ways? How do we come to terms with our pasts and become empowered from them? How do we tell our stories? Who is listening?
