Salima Siler Marriott Gibbs was born and raised in segregated Baltimore Maryland. Her loving and supportive nuclear included her parents Jesse and Cordie Siler, brothers Jesse, Jr. and James and a younger sister Gloria. From being inspired by the spirit of her great grandmother Eliza Fosque, a midwife on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, to a lifetime of rewarding girlfriend and nurturing women relationships, as well as multiple challenges, emerged the adult activist. When her oldest child entered the public schools of New York City, Salima became a parent advocate. She later embraced multiple dimensions of activism that included national and international racial justice and Black feminism. Integrating activism in government, Salima Siler Marriott Gibbs was an elected delegate to the Maryland General Assembly for sixteen years before being appointed tthe Deputy Mayor of Community and Human Development of Baltimore City, 2007-2010. Bringing Into Being Our Legacy is the story of Salima Siler Marriott Gibbs' life and the legacies of the sixteen women who were the primary influencers of her evolving adult life. The book also shares her conceptualization of a Black feminist theory from the actions and thoughts of women activist of African Ancestry beginning with the trans-Atlantic slave ships to the 21st Century and the application of the theory to African American women activists.
