Francisco (Frank") Ochoa is a 57-year-old Catholic priest employed as a chaplain at Rocky Mountain University. Although fully accustomed to his pastoral duties, Frank has started to experience the same kind of burnout that many other people do at the same age regardless of their profession. Complicating the situation is the tension between his theological liberality and the growing conservatism within the Church. Then, after a stressful experience when Frank happens upon a severe highway accident in the Colorado Rockies, Frank chooses to vent his professional and personal frustrations though a surprising decision: he joins a volunteer EMT squad in suburban Denver. Doing so allows him relief from the boredom he feels while attending to affluent, entitled college students. Joining the squad also leads to a romantic triangle with Laurie and Tyler--Frank's two fellow-EMTs on his shift the squad--a situation that would be tense anyway but is all the more so given Father Frank's obligation to maintain his priestly vows. The drama intensifies as Frank gets drawn deeper into both of these relationships and into the disturbing, often dangerous work of emergency medical services. The harsh realities of caring for sick and injured patients soon challenge Frank's perception of himself and his relationships with others. To complicate matters, he grows more and more attracted to Laurie and simultaneously more and more appalled by Tyler, Laurie's technically skilled but interpersonally abrasive partner.
