Set in Georgian England, around 1750.Two English twins of royal birth (Sophie & Juliet) are kidnapped as infants and held in France. Their governess steals them back, and hides them in an orphanage in England. The twins grow up there, unaware of their origin. Sophie is renamed Jane. Juliet is renamed Anne. Jane becomes headmistress of the orphanage. Anne becomes a farmer's wife, and has a daughter Sarah. Lord Grayton, owner of the estate that includes the orphanage, falls in love with Jane. His son Henry falls in love with Sarah. Both would like to marry, but are prevented from doing so because of class. Grayton appeals to King George III and Queen Charlotte for permission to marry. The answer is no, but the Queen does enough sleuthing to identify the twin's royal origin. With that resolved, the love stories have a happy ending. Along the way are twists and turns, subplots, palace intrigue, and a foiled attempt at ransom. There are thieves, thugs, and defiance of His Majesty¿s will to the point of banishment from the realm. A broad spectrum of British characters is brought to life, from royalty to the simplest villager, and from the highest of kindness and thoughtfulness to the lowest debauchery.
