Aithne is a warrior kidnapped from her homeland during a Viking invasion and taken to a settlement in Iceland. Forced to marry her captor, she becomes pregnant shortly before he leaves for the raid that will claim his life. Once born, her daughter, Brenna, exhibits a strange appearance and abilities; Aithne fears that Brenna, heir to her father's land, will take the one thing Aithne has left. Spurred by the dark sorcery she learns from the relics that her late husband's mother left behind, including a magic mirror that allows her to spy on whomever she likes, Aithne descends into a madness leading first to Brenna's exile then to murder. Awakened from her apparent death by Gunnolf, a prince harboring a dark secret, Brenna is tasked by the dwarves who raised her from childhood with taking revenge on her mother. Brenna finds that Aithne, in her quest to remain young and beautiful, has become a murderer of local virgins. She ends her mother's life and tries to make amends for Aithne's crimes, including the spell of lycanthropy laid upon Gunnolf. Though unable to break the spell, she falls in love with him and becomes pregnant with his child. Meanwhile, the dwarf who has always secretly loved Brenna walks into the sunlight and turns to stone when he realizes she will never return to them.
