Brian Kasymaliev's poems are fiercely, unabashedly desperate, but there is in them a "gaiety transfiguring all that dread" -- by which Yeats meant a gaiety of making that makes all the difference. Their texture is always interesting. Kaysmaliev shown the reader part of the underbelly of american life by seeming to come from underneath the subject: it's real poetry, in my ive, with a tone and texture that mark it as distindtively his.
