Egypt is in a state of high alert when SALMA IBRAHIM lands in Cairo where she's come to help her journalist fiancé, PAUL HAYS, with an investigation into corrupt arms deals by linking him to her upper-class family. In the background, an extremist group, Tag el Islam, is preparing to overthrow the Egyptian government. Additionally, its leader, Sheikh NABULSI, has a vendetta against Salma's father for having had him tortured in prison. On the way to the family home, a pick-up truck deliberately smashes into her father's convoy barely missing the limo she's in but her father insists it's an accident. The morning of the same day a Mossad agent, AARON, informs Paul the Tag plans to kidnap Salma to get to her father and blackmails Paul into acquiring a Tag flash drive from his newspaper editor friend by threatening her safety. Caught in a demonstration, Paul is violently accosted in Tahrir Square shortly after the major government building is set on fire and discovers his friend murdered at the spot they were to meet. Nevertheless, he's able to recover the drive, concludes he's in danger from the Tag and keeps it to bargain with both it and the Mossad. On the same afternoon, MURAD RAGAB, a suitor Salma rejected after a quasi-love affair when they were graduate students in California, is taking minutes at a Tag al Islam Council meeting where he is an ambivalent aide to sheikh Nabulsi. He takes a four hour train ride to Minya to meet with the members of the cell for which he is responsible because the Tag has decided to take action soon. Next afternoon, Nabulsi pulls Murad off the Tag's effort to kidnap Paul and Salma from a conference on a Nile cruise boat the following day. Paul survives the explosion of the boat, the subsequent fire and Tag's armed the attack. Salma is injured by a Tag members who abducts her. Murad betrays his mentor by spiriting her away to protect her from his radical, extremist, group.
