The Woody Guthrie Poets of Oklahoma began in 2005 when twenty poets gathered to read their poetry at the annual Guthrie Folk Festival held each July in Woody's hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma. Each poet read their original poems written to commemorate the themes Woody Guthrie espoused and promoted in his art and his work, along with depicting the era about which Woody wrote and sang. The Woody Poets are dedicated to assuring the continuation of the tradition which has had a momentous impact on the Oklahoma literary community and the legacy of Oklahoma's own Woody Guthrie.
