This book is about a little boy named Camden. He wasborn profoundly deaf. At the age of two-and-a-half he received cochlearimplants to enable him to hear. The implants are complex medical deviceswhich stimulate the auditory nerve directly. The process of learning soundsand words and, ultimately, words of communication begins after theoperation. Under normal circumstances, a child begins hearing at around18 weeks of pregnancy and at about 6 to 7 months of pregnancy, a childcan hear the mother's voice. The deaf child has to catch up to be on the same language level as hispeers. Intense speech and language therapy is necessary to reach thislevel.Camden wears hearing aids on his ears which attach to strong magnetsconnecting to a microphone, a speech processor and a transmitter. Thereceiver (under the skin) collects the signals from the transmitter andconverts them to electrical pulses. The process is complicated technicallybut, for a child, it provides hearing and understanding in a hearing world.I have written this children's book primarily to bring attention to the deafworld of young children and to sensitize the most curious among us to ourunique and special differences. A healthy home and school environmentwhich assists young children to learn about the deaf, specifically, and all ofour differences, generally, makes the vulnerable
