The novel is Historical Fiction and an LGBTQ romance. The protagonist, Major Henry Kalten, is stationed in war-torn Berlin in the spring of 1946 to serve on the various committees working on the rebuilding of the city. On the council, all four Allied forces are represented (U.S., Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union), and there is quite a bit of conflict between the Soviets and the three other groups. Henry is a native speaker of German because he was born in Austria, and his parents moved to Fredericksburg, Texas after the Great War when Henry was eight. Henry is a Military Intelligence Officer, but his colleagues are not allowed to know that. He is there to observe because U.S. Military Intelligence wants a set of eyes and ears on the council. Henry finds love at the office, but things are very complicated because his love interest, Erik, is a Lieutenant in the Soviet army. They have to take one- or two-night trips to small hotels away from the city center just to be together. Erik's parents are both professors at the university in Moscow, but Erik's father is originally from Sweden, which is where his family's ancestral wheat farm is located. Erik takes leave in Sweden and Henry comes and meets him there and it is their first time to be together for seven nights.
